The brochure talks about the devastating effect Typhoon Frieda had on the park in the fall of 1962; more than 13,000 hemlocks were destroyed, knocking over mature trees onto younger generation of trees planted by foresters in the 1930s. In the spring of 1963, more than 22,000 Douglas fir were planted to repair the damage.
